What is a third place?

Ray Oldenburg, an American sociologist coined the term third places. Ray had travelled around the world observing the community happening in pubs, coffee shops, delis and diners and realized there was a need for "third places," - places where people could gather together across economic, ethnic, and other divides and do life together. Ray noted the decline of communal spaces in America like the post office, the Church, the central park and noted the need for third places for a heathy society. Your home is your first place. Your work is your second place. And, the "third places," are places like coffee shops where we can all gather together and do life as a community.

Eating is one of the best ways to do life and community together. Third Place Coffee shop buys from local sources where possible like the Pork Shop and the Olive Mill and from local artists. Third Place Coffee shop serves gluten free and vegan pastry options.
